Abstract

Who says the younger generation no longer cares about religious practices? In Lombok, Hindu students born between 2005 and 2007 demonstrate a surprising pattern of ritual engagement: regularly visiting temples, performing ritual purification rituals, and undertaking tirtha yatra with their families and campus communities. This study explores the motives behind their choices: which temples they visit, why they visit them, and what truly drives their spiritual journey. Using a qualitative approach through open-ended surveys and in-depth interviews with 52 Hindu students, three clusters of motives were identified, operating in layers: geographic proximity, transmission of family traditions, and the specificity of ritual functions. Suranadi Temple, Batu Bolong Temple, and Lingsar Temple dominated the visit lists across informants from various regions. These findings offer the "Triadic Motive Tirtha Yatra" model as a new, relevant framework for developing Hindu spiritual tourism in Lombok.
